A Safer Use for Gadolinium?

September 20th, 2007 · No Comments

According to an article published recently on Wired.com, gadolinium is helping one field significantly without the apparent risk of injury in those who use it – laser hard drives. Academics at a Dutch university had a problem, in that they needed a processor on their computer that could provide speed that to this point had not been realistically attained.

They tried several different things, but ultimately came to the point where laser technology was worth the try. Much to their delight, this technology delivered what they needed. The most relevant passage from the article appears below:

“The heat provided by the laser doesn’t hurt, either, making the state change of the metal a little easier. This won’t work with existing drive materials, though. The team behind the Laser disc (sorry) use an exotic mix of gadolinium, iron, and cobalt to work the magic.”

Once again, while it’s a positive to see that gadolinium is helping move technology forward, it also piques one’s sense of logic when it’s apparent that this substance is useful in decidedly “non-human” efforts and still being used in sick patients. If you have been harmed by this substance, contact the gadolinium lawyers at Williams Kherkher to schedule a free initial consultation.
