How a team of medical professionals tests patients for gadolinium risks before an MRI

September 18th, 2007 · No Comments

A responsible group of medical professionals does what it can to avoid problems and risks associated with contact agents used in MRIs and MRAs.

Recent studies suggest that before undergoing diagnostic tests, such as MRI or MRA, patients should ask for a kidney function evaluation, according to Mariners Hospital staff in Florida. It is critical that kidney and liver function tests be done prior to MRI and gadolinium contrast be avoided if kidney function is severely impaired or if kidney function is impaired to any extent if there are also liver problems. At Mariners, a team of medical professionals led by Imaging Services Medical Director Wayne Moccia joins forces to determine if Mariners patients are at risk for this kidney condition.

“It’s important that patients who have been identified as being at high risk be carefully evaluated prior to receiving an injection of IV contrast to assure they don’t develop this dangerous condition,” Moccia said.
